I bought new shoes today. I hate shoe shopping. I have weird feet. First of all, my left foot (which is larger, so it's the one that matters) measures out to be just a touch longer than a 7.5 (that is a...38, in European sizes). So, the 7.5 is just barely too short, so I move up to an 8/39. So I'm already starting out with shoes that are a full half size too big on my left foot and a full size too long on my right foot. Which is a problem I've always had, so I'm well adapted to walking in shoes that are too long.

Except. I also have wide feet. They aren't super wide anymore (they used to be EEE width), but they're wide enough that wide width is more comfortable than medium width. Well, wide width can be really tough to find, particularly in dress shoes (I have no trouble finding running shoes and usually not much trouble with casual shoes or sandals. None of which I can wear to work). So, what usually happens is if I go up a half a size, the shoes will be wide enough to work. So that puts me in an 8.5 (huh, that's also a 39 in European sizes). Sometimes, I wind up going up to a 9/40. So, the shoes are wide enough, but there does come a point where they are just too long. It depends on the shoe, but anything that's remotely pointy toe is an absolute no. I'll trip over the toes.

And then we get to the issue that I have ridiculously high arches. So, the vamp on the shoes can't be too high, or my feet will literally not go into them. And finally, I cannot wear heels. At all. My hips will start screaming by lunchtime and I'm not even on my feet all that much at work. So they have to be actualfacts flats. You know what shoes fit all my crazy requirements the best? Right. Ballet flats. You know what type of shoe has next to no arch support? Right. Ballet flats. Fortunately, these are somewhat in style at the moment, so they're relatively easy to find. And I can get enough arch support from Dr. Scholl's inserts that I can buy at the drug store for about $9. And I need to stick something in the right shoe anyway to take up enough space for me to not be walking out of the shoes, because, remember, the shoes are at least a size too big for that foot. But, the shoes have to be wide enough for me to put an insert into the left foot without my foot getting rubbed raw. While not being too long for me to walk in.

So, yeah, shoe shopping is not my idea of a great time. I did find a pair of black flats that are wide enough to deal with the inserts and not make me trip. They did not come in navy. So I get to start the whole process over to find a pair of navy flats (I have a pair, but all the new dresses I bought this spring are blue, so I could really use a second pair. Plus the ones I have aren't that comfortable barefoot and I will make many concessions in my work wardrobe, but pantyhose, especially in the summer, is absolutely not one of them). But that is going to have to wait a little while, because I have used up all my ability to deal with shoe shopping at the moment.
