1) I've been doing reading about insulin resistance and it sounds a little more familiar than I'd like. I am pretty sure my blood sugar is still in the normal ranges- it was in April and I have no reason to believe that's changed. However, I've learned that you can have insulin resistance and still have normal blood sugar. And often it is sort of the thing that happens before pre-diabetes, which given my family history is a definite concern. Fortunately, it's also frequently easy to treat (and will probably not require me to completely give up oh, everything I like to eat) and treating it can prevent things from progressing. I've been meaning to call for a doctor's appointment to discuss this with my GP for about a week and a half, but I kept putting it off because work's been so busy that by the time I would remember that I meant to call for an appointment, it would be after 4 and the office is closed. Okay, and I also wasn't making a huge effort to remember, either- this is a scary thing to me. But today, I scheduled an appointment for the first week of September and we'll see.
2) It occurred to me that the time to see if I can find some psych services is now, when I'm doing relatively well, as opposed to when I'm about five minutes away from the next crisis. Because there will be a next crisis. My GP has been doing my meds, but she told me when I went on the Wellbutrin that we're at the limit of her experience and I might want to consider talking to someone who's not guessing (I didn't point out that as far as I could tell, the psychiatrists are just guessing, too, but I do respect someone who knows their limits and appreciate her saying so). The one thing I was going to insist on is someone who treats adults with ADHD because I am absolutely not going to deal with someone who thinks adults can't have ADHD or (even better) that there's no such thing as ADHD.
So, I pulled the list of psychiatrists on my insurance and started Googling. About 95% of them specialize in drug and alcohol dependencies, neither of which is one of my issues, and I was beginning to think that this was going to be extremely difficult. The only one I found that mentioned ADHD was someone who only treats kids. And then I hit one on the list that specializes in ADHD and treats adults, and is part of a fairly large practice, so there would be options if I didn't click with someone initially. And takes my insurance. This seemed to be a reasonably good bet, so I filled out their new patient appointment request. They'll call to schedule an intake appointment. They did mention on their website that adults seeking ADHD medication need to have records of having been tested within the past three years. Mine's more like 5 years old, but I also can't take stimulants anyway so it probably won't matter. I said I was interested in medication management, but they also do therapy there. I am not sure I'm ready to do therapy again- the last round was pretty awful- but having the option would be useful.
I'm taking very deep breaths at the idea of doing this again because this is also scary and also hard, but again, let's get established someplace before the next crisis.
