I ask to get tested for insulin resistance because I’ve been doing some reading and the list of signs/symptoms is uncomfortably close to my reality.

She said, “No problem. This is the easiest thing you’ve ever come in here to do.”

We did talk about it a little bit more, and she explained that her only hesitation in ordering an A1C test for me is that 1) my fasting blood sugars are well in the normal range, so the insurance might be a bit, “say what?” and 2) there’s no difference in the codes for insulin resistance and pre-diabetes, so she wanted to make sure I knew that so I wasn’t shocked when the dietitians that work for my insurance company start stalking me. (it's more likely that I'm in the stage before pre-diabetes than actually pre-diabetic at this point, because my fasting blood sugar was pretty much perfect when we checked it a couple months ago)

I said that was fine. And it is- I've been ducking the health coaches at my insurance company for 2+ years at this point. They try to contact me about once a quarter to "help me manage my conditions." I'm not sure exactly which condition they want to help me manage, but I am pretty sure that there's nothing they can tell me about being a fat, asthmatic, depressed, insomniac with ADHD, allergies, chronic sinusitis and chronic back pain that I don't already know. My tolerance for being told things I already know about my own experience is somewhere in the negative numbers, so I just delete the voicemails and ignore them.

So, one quick blood draw, and I'll have an answer probably either Tuesday or Wednesday (this is a quick test, but it was late Friday afternoon and Monday's a federal holiday, so it'll get a bit delayed). And then we can start negotiating treatment if need be. First line treatment is go lose 10% of your body weight. That's not going to happen, so I want to just skip to the next option instead of screwing around for 3-6 months. I understand there's going to be some adjustments needed to what I eat and working out and whatnot, but I have a highly efficient metabolism that adds two pounds to my weight for every pound I attempt to lose because it thinks that Central Ohio is experiencing a massive famine. Which it absolutely is not. This is what happens when you spend your twenties flirting with anorexia. Plus, it's really freaking difficult to lose weight if your insulin is out of whack, because uh, insulin resistance causes weight gain.

I'm concerned, but not seriously worried. This is a thing that was likely going to happen at some point because genetics. It's still a thing that can be delayed. Plus, I've lived roughly 25 years with a diabetic parent. This is not a thing that is alien to me. And it's not like it's my first go-round with chronic conditions.
