New Building, so far
Apr. 5th, 2016 06:38 pm1) My morning commute hasn't been bad at all, but I was purposefully leaving early. Well, okay, this morning it wasn't so much on purpose- I didn't realize it was still 20 to7 when I left the house. Tomorrow, I'm going to see if I can remember to try leaving at 7:15, so I can tell how that will work. Coming home has been a little more challenging, and I think I'm just going to have to resign myself to getting home at 6 instead of closer to 5:30. Partly, because it's taking about 10 minutes or so to get to the car in the first place- I think the actual drive time has only been about 10-15 minutes longer.
2) Parking has also not been as bad as expected/I was warned it would be. But that's with getting to work before 7:30, so yeah. Although I'm told that even if I get there at 8, I can probably still expect to get a reasonable spot.
3) I got completely lost yesterday trying to find where I was going. I went on Sunday, with my dad (Dad works for the same Extremely Large International Corporation, but we work in very, very different lines of business that have nothing to do with each other. However, we are now both located in this giant building, which is kind of nice). He showed me how to read the navigation signs and where to park and how to get in. Except, when we left, we left from *his* area, which was out a different door than we went in. So when I got there yesterday, I remembered walking across the garage from a farther away door and went through that door instead of the door I should have gone through. I figured it out fairly quickly, and figured out how to get where I was going, but that was a bit annoying.
4) Our temporary cubes are okay. They're kind of janky, but eh, it's a month. The chairs, however, are horrific. I'm going to wander around and see if I can find a better chair in an unoccupied cube tomorrow, because I would like to still be able to, like, walk by the end of April. If the chairs in our permanent location aren't better, I'm absolutely seeing what I have to do to get a "medical" chair. Pretty sure my back problems would qualify.
5) The cafeterias are actually pretty good. Some of it is kind of expensive, but I got breakfast this morning for less than $3 and lunch was about $6, which is definitely reasonable.
6) I suspect today might have been better if I hadn't completely bit it walking into the parking garage last night. There's a step down to the pavement at the entrance of the garage. However, there's nothing reflective or otherwise contrasting at the edge of that step. The garage is pretty dim, and yesterday was completely overcast. My depth perception is pretty bad- even with my glasses, I have trouble with stairs and edges, particularly if there's no contrast between one step and another and if the light is bad. Everything flattens out. So to me, the step and the pavement looked completely level and I had no idea the step was even there. So I went flying.
Fortunately, I'm reasonable at falling and was able to lean enough that I didn't come down with all my weight on any one body part. Which probably saved me from a sprained or broken wrist, ankle, or knee cap. I have a giant scrape on my knee and a bruise above and below that point, a decent scrape on my left hand, a bruise at the base of my palm on my right hand, and some barely noticeable abrasions on both palms. (Somehow, though, my tights didn't rip. I still can't figure that one out). Everything moves the way it's supposed to, but I jarred my shoulders and hips pretty well. They weren't sore this morning, but they've gotten more sore as the day has gone on. This is one of those times where I dearly wish I wasn't allergic to most NSAIDs and could just take some damn naprosyn already, but ibuprofen is as good as it gets for me (and I'm really not supposed to take it, although I ignore that label warning with some regularity).
So, yeah. I'm having major difficulties concentrating long enough to get anything actually done, and I suspect I *look* shell shocked and anxious, given the way people who are not my team are reacting to me (my team mates are also pretty out of sorts. Plus, they're used to me). But, I'm almost halfway through the first week. And I only have to do this for three weeks, because I'll be on vacation a week.
