NaNo #11- Musings and Personal Canon
Nov. 11th, 2011 11:42 pmThe writer's block crept up on me today and since I'm still unwell, I was kind of too tired to try to push anything. I suspected this might happen at some point, which is why I said 30 pieces of *writing* not necessarily 30 fics.
So, tonight, I'm gonna ramble a bit about NCIS, because I just saw "Devil's Triangle" (09x07, from 11/1) today. I'm perpetually behind on most tv because I wait to watch them with other members of my household who also follow the shows I like.
The ending of NCIS with Gibbs' & Fornell's ex-wife is kind of heartbreaking. It's sad that she couldn't have told him what she felt when they were actually married, but at the same time, I'm sure he wouldn't have heard her at that point. I get the impression he was still in a hell of a lot of pain at that juncture. Although, now I'm wondering about the timeline- based on "Hiatus", Shannon and Kelly died around 1991, since Gibbs thought it was 15 years prior and that was in 2006. I'm assuming that he didn't marry Diane right away, because yeah, no. But she was married to Fornell in 2004, and clearly had been married for awhile, since Tobias says they were "still married" in 2004. Back in "Escaped", Fornell's daughter looked like she was probably 7 or 8ish, which would mean she'd been born somewhere around 1998 or 1999, because that episode also takes place in 2006. Figuring that Fornell and Diane were married a little bit before she got pregnant, that would mean they probably got married around 1997-1998. So, how long were Gibbs and Diane married? She made it sound like it was for at least a couple of years. (And yes, I know figuring timelines in NCIS is really pretty futile because they aren't consistent, like, ever. I try to make it make as much sense as possible. My view of this sort of thing is to stick to the spirit of the canon if something is contradictory, but it's clear that my version just plain makes way more sense). And, damn, Gibbs went through three wives in a pretty damn short amount of time because he's not married in 2003 when the show starts. I always had the impression that Wife #4 (Stephanie?) had left fairly recently to that point, but even so, that's 3 wives in about 10-12 years. Since I really don't think Gibbs would have remarried until maybe 1993 at the earliest, that puts the average on the marriages at about 3 years or so, maybe. I mean, this is Gibbs we're talking about. Three years might be more than enough to decide you want to chase him out of the house with a nine-iron. It's probably a really good thing he apparently decided to stop getting married.
