This is part of a longer Hawaii Five-0 story I'm working on that takes place immediately after my story Sleep, and it was inspired by a comment I got on the story at A03 about how the aftermath of Jenna's betrayal and Steve and the team's little jaunt to North Korea is going to be much messier than we'll get to see.
To set the scene, the story starts out with Chin waking up on the lanai and finding Steve awake because he's hurting too badly to sleep. He realizes that Steve was supposed to have gotten some further medical care when he got back to Hawaii but didn't tell anyone he was supposed to see a doctor and decides to call Malia instead of dragging Steve to the ER. Malia comes over, gets Steve a couple pills to make it through the night and Chin gets Steve settled. Danny wakes up the next morning and he and Chin formulate a plan for what comes next: 1) get Steve taken care of, 2) talk to the governor and 3) figure out what, if anything, Jenna messed with. Lori goes to talk with the governor, while Chin, Danny and Kono hang out at Steve's so they can't be accused of messing with evidence and because they're not about to leave Steve on his own. Danny takes Steve to the doctor, with the result being that he's going to need some PT and be out of the field for about six weeks, but he'll be fine. Danny and Steve have gotten home, Lori has shared what happened with the governor, and Chin, Danny and Lori have gone to the office to start the process of figuring out things there. Kono's hanging out with Steve because while Steve insists he's fine being alone, the team doesn't *want* him to be alone and knows he *shouldn't* be alone. So that's what's going on...
:::
Kono was sprawled out in the recliner and flipping channels when Steve startled awake wildly. "Hey, boss, hey," she said, springing up and coming over to the couch. "You're good, you're home."
"Mary. Mary Ann," Steve said, hoarsely. "Gotta call Mary. Make sure she's ok."
"Ok," Kono said. "Hang on a second, let me get your phone, ok?" She went over to the table to find Steve's phone. "We didn't call her or anything. She doesn't know anything happened," Kono said.
"Need to know she's ok," Steve said, frowning worriedly. He tried to reach out for his phone and couldn't get it. "Can't..."
"I got it," Kono said, sitting down on the end of the coffee table. She poked at the contacts list. "I don't see her listed."
"Under Elaine. In case someone got my phone," Steve said.
"Gotcha," Kono said, not commenting on her boss's paranoia. She figured he was entitled to whatever level of paranoid made him feel safe. "Ok, here we go. Do you want me to call and talk to her first, or just put it on speaker for you?"
Steve shook his head, dazedly. "I don't...can't think, stupid drugs."
"I'll do it, is that ok?" Kono asked.
"Yeah," Steve said, slumping back on the couch.
"Ok," Kono said. She hit the call button and listened.
"Hey Steve-o," Mary's voice greeted her on the other end of the phone.
"Hi Mary, it's Kono Kalakaua," she started.
Mary interrupted her. "Where's Steve, is he ok?" she asked anxiously.
"Steve's here, he's ok," Kono reassured her. "He's been injured, but he's going to be just fine." she smiled a little at Steve, who was watching her, also anxious. "I'm calling because he wanted to talk to you, but he's a little doped up just now and couldn't manage the phone."
"Oh," Mary said, sounding relieved. "But he's ok?"
"He is going to be just fine," Kono repeated. "Here, let me put the phone on speaker and you can talk to him yourself." She switched the phone over to speaker and said, "You still there?"
"Yeah, I'm here," Mary said. "Steve? You there?"
"Hi Mare," Steve said, sounding relieved. "You're ok?"
"I'm fine, are *you* ok?" Mary asked.
"M'good," Steve said, nodding.
"What happened?" Mary asked.
"Got a li'l messed up. But it's ok," Steve said.
"Are you in the hospital?" Mary asked.
"No, no, 'm at home. See, ok, right?" Steve said. He was starting to slur a little, now that the jolt of panic had been relieved.
"Yeah, that's good," Mary said. "They gave you the good stuff, huh?"
"Uh-huh," Steve said. "Needed t'make sure you were ok."
"I'm fine, big brother," Mary assured him. "Everything's fine."
"Ok, good," Steve said. His eyelids were starting to droop. "You be careful."
"I will be careful," Mary said. "Promise."
"Good," Steve said, as his eyes closed completely.
Kono picked up the phone and walked into the kitchen. "Mary?"
"Kono? Did he fall asleep?" Mary asked.
"Yeah, hang on a sec," Kono said, switching the phone off of speaker. "There."
"What happened?" Mary asked.
"It's kind of a long story," Kono said. "But the important part is that everyone's safe and everyone's ok."
"Ooookay," Mary said. Kono could tell that didn't quite satisfy Mary's curiosity, but she could also tell that Mary was willing to let it slide for the moment. "How badly is Steve hurt?"
"It's really not too bad," Kono said. "He's got some pulled muscles in his upper back and he's a little bruised up. He's going to need some physical therapy, but right now, he's got some muscle relaxers and he's just supposed to rest for a few days. He'll be back up and around in a week or so, probably. Your brother's a tough guy."
"I know," Mary said. She sighed. "Does he need me to come out there?"
"I don't think he'll think that's a good idea," Kono said, carefully. She wasn't sure how much of all of this was related to anything about Steve's parents and she knew Steve would think keeping Mary safe was the top priority. "We're not going to leave him alone. I'm with him right now, and Danny's going to come and stay over tonight."
"Ok," Mary said. "Just...if he needs me, I can be there in, like, 8 hours or something. By morning, for sure."
"Right now, we're ok," Kono said. "I'll talk to him when he wakes up again, see what he says. But I'm thinking he'll want you to stay put for right now."
"Ok," Mary said. "Tell him I love him and I miss him, ok?"
"I will," Kono promised.
"Thanks," Mary said. "Can I call you to see how he's doing?"
"Of course," Kono said. "Do you still have my number?" She'd given Mary her number the last time she was in Hawaii, when they'd been puzzling out the meaning of the evidence in her dad's toolbox.
"Yeah, I do," Mary said.
"Great," Kono said. "Like I said, I'll be here until tonight and then I'll be back tomorrow. But you can call me anytime."
"Thanks," Mary said, sounding relieved. "I'm glad you guys are going to stay with him."
"At least until he's not quite so dopey," Kono promised. "We've got a whole schedule worked out and everything."
"Ok, good," Mary said. "I guess I'll talk to you later, then."
"Yup," Kono said. "I will call you if *anything* changes. But Steve's going to be just fine."
"Thank you so much," Mary said. "I'm really glad he's got you guys."
"We're pretty glad we've got him," Kono said. She heard Mary chuckle as she hung up on her end. Kono went back into the living room and checked on Steve. He was still asleep, so she sat back down and went back to flipping channels. She made a mental note to tell Chin and Danny that she'd talked to Mary, just in case Steve woke up like that again.
