200 episodes, Dear Lord.
Feb. 12th, 2012 10:25 pmHave I really watched 200 episodes of NCIS? Apparently so.
I don't know what I think about this episode. It's a little...not NCIS. It feels way more Stargate or Star Trek. And I think some of the character choices were a little off. I imagine it had to do with actor availability, but I think Kate should have been there much more (and I don't really buy Kate/DiNozzo, especially not as parents, but that's kind of besides the point). And Riley didn't strike me as important as this episode made him out to be, but I'm also not sure who I'd have used in his place.
There were definite good things here, though- I loved how Gibbs was so freaked out. I honestly don't think I've ever seen Gibbs look freaked. And I'm really not sure if he was freaked out more by the situation or by Mike Franks being all mystical like (I know which one freaked me out more...). Gibbs's mom was good. I liked that, for several reasons. First of all, that's the first thing that really hurt him. Also, it was a little different to see a character with a mom who abandoned him, instead of it being the father. That's not so usual, and it makes a lot of sense for Gibbs. And as soon as I saw the little girl shoes, I grabbed the kleenex box because I knew I was not going to make it through Kelly and Shannon without bawling. And I was right.
Up until near the end, I was honestly unsure how it was going to go. My dad and I have been speculating that Gibbs was reaching the point where he was just going to be done (or Mark Harmon was reaching that point, either way), and we both thought this was Gibbs saying good bye. I'm not sure I would have blamed him, although I would have been sad. But at the end, I said I thought this was the show telling us that Gibbs isn't going anywhere. Which is also good and fits- I knew there was a flashback component because a friend mentioned it on Facebook and I asked her if Gibbs had finally gone 'round the bend or if it was something else. She told me it was "something else" and I commented that I was glad because I'd thought Gibbs was really starting to do better lately. Especially after the Christmas episode, I thought he was starting to let go of the sad, just a bit. I said I've been much more concerned that Tony's going to be the one to lose the plot (and I do still think this is coming and if anyone on this show deserves a nice nervous breakdown, it's Tony. I think that mask has been cracking and it's not going to be pretty).
Now to catch up with NCIS:LA. I see from the preview that we're trying to kill Sam again. Didn't we already do that this season? Are they trying to drive G around the bend? Because losing Sam would do it. Anyway, I think that's tomorrow night's project- I'm at least three eps behind.
