No. Rape Is Not Funny. Ever.
Jul. 10th, 2012 02:09 pmI am probably preaching to the choir, given that the people who likely read this are intelligent and reasonable people who understand this sort of thing without being told, but this got me all riled up and therefore, I am saying so.
I came across this Tumblr post on Twitter. If you don't want to go look at it, I'll point out that the salient points are this woman went to a comedy club where Daniel Tosh (who I am not going to link) was one of the headliners, or performers or whatever (I don't go to a lot of comedy clubs). And Daniel Tosh basically started out his act by talking about how rape jokes are funny. Well, this woman could not just sit there and listen to that and she said "No, rape jokes are *never* funny". Whereupon Tosh started discussing how it would be funny if she got gang-raped right there. Which...no. That is not funny. That is not ever funny. That will not ever be funny. I didn't really know who Daniel Tosh was before today, although I now know he is the same person as Tosh.0, who I had heard of, but never come across myself. And I am now glad I have never come across him myself because the top of my head may have exploded. I am still so angry about it over an hour later, even after I walked away from the computer and went to eat lunch that my hands are like claws over my keyboard.
The redeeming thing about this is that the person who tweeted about it is a guy who also basically said, "No, this is not funny, this is not ever funny, and I don't write my webcomic that way" (and he doesn't. I've been reading his webcomic, Questionable Content, for about 8 years, so I feel pretty comfortable in saying that). So, I feel like there are people who are not women out there who get that. It is a small redeeming thing, but it is one.
And now I need to stop being angry for a little while and go run errands and then go spend my evening with a bunch of great elementary school kids where we'll read about ocean creatures and do some multiplication drills and then have a scavenger hunt for cookies and maybe play some kickball. And I will feel hopeful about people again.
