Clothes, what?
Sep. 2nd, 2012 08:24 pmSo, apparently, my mother is tired of seeing the same four shirts on me. And she's noticed that half my clothes are starting to fall apart (not the four shirts I wear out in public). So, when we discovered that Fashion Bug is closing, she decided she needed new work clothes and that I needed new something. Somewhere along the line, I kind of quit buying clothes for the most part, unless they were strictly necessary. Mostly because I've been pretty broke for the past, um, *counts on fingers* 14 years? 13 years? My entire adult life? At some point, I kind of decided that I'd rather have cable/netflix/media in general than new clothes. And, well, clothes shopping can be a pain in the ass when you're in plus sizes and I don't always have the spoons to deal with it.
I now own three new "wear in public" shirts: a teal short sleeve shirt with kind of a pleat-y decoration at the collar, a greenish-blue long sleeve t-shirt, and a dark blue/purplish graphic print layered tank top. And two "gym shirts": graphic tees with sparkly things on them. One is white with a green and blue random kind of graphic and the other is grey with a pink/dark pink flower graphic. I'm okay with wearing graphic tees, but I don't like sparkly things on my clothes. For the gym, though, I don't really care that much.
I am annoyed that Fashion Bug is going out of business, however, even though I pretty much never shop there. I can't wear their pants (they have the wrong kind of rise for my body), and most of their shirts have lots of bold prints, bling and embellishments and that's just not my style. They are, however, a store that has reasonably priced plus size clothes that go up to 4X/30 and many, if not most of the styles are identical to the styles in their straight sizes. That's not so common- frequently, if a store does both plus and straight sizes, they don't make the same clothes for both sizes. And notably, the plus sizes are generally less stylish. So, even though their clothes aren't generally my taste (although, I can often find at least one or two things there, as my haul from above demonstrates), I am unhappy that there will be one fewer option around here for clothes. If for no other reason than being unhappy on my mom's behalf, since she can wear their pants and does like the type of style they offer (she found several rather nice tops that looked great on her, which was fun). I do hope someone comes in to fill the void in the market- there may be considerably more plus size clothing on the market than when I was a plus sized teenager, but there's still not remotely the selection that there is in straight sizes and often, nice things (i.e., things that are not styled for people who are my late grandmother) are on the expensive side, which makes them less accessible.
