Friday Fic Recs
Oct. 12th, 2012 11:50 amI have had a very long and not very good week. It started out with things being all out of whack due to people being out of town and meetings on unusual days and me feeling physically out of sorts which does not mesh well with changes in the routine. And then it culminated in job issues (or rather, decided lack of job issues) and extended family medical drama (which is on it's way to being resolved, but was scary, nonetheless). So, if anyone's got good comfort fic recs, I am all ears. At this point, I'm not even sure I care what fandom it's in.
So, it is perhaps appropriate that about half of these recs are pretty much comfort reading.
Sense Memory (1634 words) by

Fandom: Hawaii Five-0 (2010)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Steve McGarrett/Danny "Danno" Williams
Characters: Steve McGarrett, Danny "Danno" Williams
This is a Danny-takes-care-of-Steve fic. Post 3.01. Because if anyone deserved a breakdown after that point, it was Steve. Well, Chin, too, of course, but Chin did. Steve probably did not.
Dreaming of Blue Skies (17236 words) by
flitterflutterfly
Chapters: 6/6
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Rating: Explicit
Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard, Ronon Dex/Teyla Emmagan
Characters: Rodney McKay, John Sheppard, Ronon Dex, Teyla Emmagan, Evan Lorne, Parrish (Stargate Atlantis), Katie Brown, Sam Carter, Radek Zelenka
Summary:
I like the dystopia in this and I like the premise. The sex was, eh. Probably not as necessary as it seemed. But the concept is what drew me in.
New York Minute (20174 words) by
Ellidfics
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling
Rating: Explicit
Warning: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Relationships: Remus Lupin/Severus Snape
Characters: Poppy Pomfrey, Harry Potter, Minerva McGonagall, Original Characters, Remus Lupin, Severus Snape, terrorists - Character, first responders
Series: Part 1 of Motherless Child
Summary:
This is an old favorite that I just rediscovered because it had been posted on AO3 and I happened to go looking for the author. It's not HP canon compliant, because it was originally written well before book 7. Probably before book 6, actually. I don't remember. I've found that most of my favorite Harry Potter fics aren't canon-compliant anyway, but rather "might have beens" for different characters set in that universe. At any rate, it's fantastic and real and uses my two favorite characters to their best. It does involve the aftermath of the September 11th attacks, so if that bothers you, best to skip. It's not entirely necessary to read this one to understand what happens in the next story in the series (which is also excellent).
Night Sweats (2011 words) by
thegrrrl2002
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Hawaii Five-0 (2010)
Rating: Explicit
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Steve McGarrett/Catherine Rollins/Danny "Danno" Williams
Summary:
Okay, here's the thing. Steve and Danny are practically married. They are. They even kind of joke about it. But the show brought Catherine, who's been Steve's FWB (or girlfriend. That's never been entirely clear) for awhile, on to the show as a regular. Now, Catherine is great, and I'm looking forward to her being around more. And so, fandom being fandom, looked at Danny and Steve and looked at Catherine and Steve, and shrugged and said, well, obviously, there's only one real solution to this, and went for the Danny/Steve/Catherine OT3. I have to say, I'm liking it. I think it works, and here's a great example of how.
So, it is perhaps appropriate that about half of these recs are pretty much comfort reading.

Summary:
John Sheppard was a rarity, a soldier modified not for speed and strength, but for a very specific skill set. The ability to enter dreams. But John wasn’t the obedient soldier the Nacon Armed Forces was hoping for and when he runs, he uses all of his experience to escape their searching eyes. Once settled into his life as a thief, John thinks very little of his newest mark, the billionaire inventor Rodney McKay, at least until he enters McKay’s dreams for the first time and discovers a world that he’d believed only existed in fairytales.
