Long, long couple days.
Oct. 17th, 2012 01:35 pmIt has been an exceedingly long several days. What happened was my uncle collapsed in Chicago while visiting my cousin. My aunt did CPR and he came back pretty quickly. He wound up in the cardiac care unit in a hospital in Chicago whereupon they discovered that his wonky aortic heart valve had pretty well much failed. They'd known for years that there was an issue, but this was still very sudden- he'd been perfectly fine tramping all over the city for the previous 4 days. Well, the doctors decided that he was stable enough to return home to Ohio for the surgery to replace the bad valve. Only thing is, they took the bus to Chicago in the first place (they were at the bus station getting ready to board to come home when he collapsed, actually), so they didn't have a car. And my aunt was exhausted, for obvious reasons. Since my mother is a RN, everyone from the doctors to my aunt and uncle was much more comfortable with him travelling if she would be willing to handle the transportation. So, on Saturday, my mom and I drove to Chicago. We stayed over with my cousin and then loaded everyone up in my car and drove back to Ohio. My aunt and uncle live about an hour and a half away from us, so we stayed overnight with them on Sunday so my aunt could get some sleep and then came back here on Monday. My uncle went back into the hospital on Monday. He'll have surgery tomorrow. My mom went back down to help translate surgeon-ese for my aunt and my cousins and she'll stay until he's out of the ICU after surgery.
But, after spending roughly 14 hours in a car in 2 days, sleeping on two couches (although they were rather comfortable couches) and spending a fair amount of time hanging around a hospital, I still feel like I've been run over by something large, even after 2 nights in my own bed. I am kind of in that worried/cranky mode and I am having an Eat All The Carbs moment, which doesn't bother me, really, except that we have no good carbs for these purposes. So, I am baking rolls. And catching up on my TV watching. With a cat intermittently sitting on my arms, because he's super clingy at the moment (The cat likes having all his people in one place, so his little world is totally turned upside down at the moment). He makes it really hard to type, and so I doubt there will be recapping. Everything will be just fine, but, damn, I'm tired.
