Oh, my God, do I ache today. I was up for almost 22 hours, which I was surprised to find was still within my ability to do and remain coherent, if slightly loopy. I've never been good at all-nighters. I may not sleep at night all the time, but I do generally get my 8-9 hours of sleep in somewhere.
I do have to say that working the polls was a lot of fun. Exhausting fun, somewhat painful fun (I was running the voting machines, which meant I was on my feet more than I wasn't, even though I did get chances to sit down in the afternoon). My back held up surprisingly well- it didn't start really complaining until around 5pm, by which point I'd been on my feet for nearly 12 hours. Some ibuprofen got me through to the end in reasonable fashion (or at least until I could come home and take the Norflex). Granted, the pinched nerve that goes from my hip to my knee made itself known about 30 minutes into the process, but I expected that (it doesn't hurt. It just makes the outside of my thigh go numb. It usually goes away if I sit down for a little while- although, it's still numb at the moment. Too much aggravation yesterday, I guess- and it's been declared to be annoying but not dangerous, so I don't worry about it). Wearing my newish running shoes was a very good idea- my feet didn't start to bother me at all until after 6pm and they weren't yelling in earnest until the very end. I think I can consider that pair of shoes well and broken in at this point.
And then I came home, ate a bagel and collapsed on the couch for the next several hours. Being Ohioans, we couldn't manage the talking heads on the news stations, because we just plain couldn't take the speculation over our poor football of a state any longer. So we popped up the CNN website and the NPR website (NPR had a fabulous board up on their site- it was what they were using in the studio. We loved it) on the laptops and watched Storage Wars on the tv, until after Ohio was called for the President. Then we started surfing around the news stations (including Fox News. Which was kind of hilarious, given that we're apparently better versed in the political climate of Northeast Ohio than Karl Rove. Hint: it's the most liberal part of the state). I stayed up for Romney's concession speech, which I thought was very gracious, and then for the President's victory speech, which I thought was one of the best speeches I've ever heard him make. And then I crawled up the stairs and into my bed for 10 hours.
I've gotten up to eat and check websites (I did not eat nearly enough food yesterday. I had breakfast at 4:45 am, then lunch at 11:30ish, and then nothing other than mints (I kept eating them to keep my throat from getting too dry because I was talking so much), a granola bar and a cookie until I got home. By that point, I was too tired to eat more than a bagel and an orange. I will probably pay for that today). I am seriously considering going back to bed for a few hours since I don't have to be anywhere except for swim practice tonight and that's not until 7. I kind of want to skip it, but I'm pretty sure my lower body would be better off if I got the exercise, particularly since it's all non-weight bearing. But, oh, oh, am I glad the election is over. I should get at least six to twelve months before the cycle starts up again in Ohio (not for the presidential election, but for the House elections and the gubernatorial in 2014).
