miss_lucy21: Sam Hanna & G Callen sitting on a bench (G & Sam)
[personal profile] miss_lucy21
I discovered Mumford & Sons last summer and promptly scolded half my music loving friends for not introducing me to them sooner. I fell in love with their first album, Sigh No More and I think I have the whole thing memorized at this point (Babel is...okay. I may need to live with it for a while longer. It doesn't have the same gut punch to it, at least for me. I can definitely understand why that one won the Grammy, though- it's definitely more commercial feeling).

And somewhere in the many repetitions, I must have been listening to it while musing on The Casefic or on NCIS:LA in general (there was a lot of that this summer) and it occurred to me that this album could basically be the theme album for this crew. No, seriously. There's something about each song that applies to pretty much every character on the show. Except maybe Uncle Owen. I don't think I've found him in there yet.

Because I'm in analytical mode and because that idea keeps hitting me at odd moments, I'm going to tell you where I see everyone in that album.

1. Sigh No More: This is a G song. Maybe also a Kensi song, but really a G song. I mean, really:
Love it will not betray you, dismay or enslave you,
It will set you free
Be more like the man you were made to be.
There is a design, an alignment, a cry
Of my heart to see,
The beauty of love as it was made to be

Now does that not sound like a lesson G needed to hear when he was about, oh, 19 and falling into bed with dangerous people? And then again when he was in his 20s. And again in his 30s? And more than likely still needs to hear.

2. The Cave: If I knew how to do vids, I would totally vid this song with all sorts of teamy goodness. Here's why:
But I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again

And
Now let me at the truth
Which will refresh my broken mind

And
Cause I need freedom now
And I need to know how
To live my life as it's meant to be

Really, can't you just see the vid?

3. Winter Winds: This one kind of makes me think of Nell and Eric dancing around each other. I think Nell more than Eric, with this part:
And my head told my heart
"Let love grow"
But my heart told my head
"This time no
This time no"

4. Roll Away Your Stone: This is a G song, all over:
You told me that I would find a hole,
Within the fragile substance of my soul
And I have filled this void with things unreal,
And all the while my character it steals

Darkness is a harsh term don't you think?
And yet it dominates the things I seek

5. White Blank Page: This is a Sam song, I think, in the beginning:
Can you lie next to her
and give her your heart, your heart?
As well as your body
And can you lie next to her
and confess your love, your love?
As well as your folly

I mean, that's Sam and Michele, isn't it?

But then later:
Lead me to the truth and I will follow you with my whole life
oh lead me to the truth and I will follow you with my whole life

G would, wouldn't he? (he keeps creeping into all these songs)

6. I Gave You All: Deeks, in a dark mood, I think:
If only I had an enemy bigger than my apathy I could have won

But I gave you all

Close my eyes for a while
Force from the world a patient smile

But I gave you all

But you rip it from my hands
And you swear it's all gone
And you rip out all I have
Just to say that you've won

Well now you've won

7. Little Lion Man: This is mostly what I kind of wish Hetty had said to G in apology at the beginning of S3. Or at least to admit it. No, I'm still not kind of mad about S3!Hetty. Why do you ask?
But it was not your fault but mine
And it was your heart on the line
I really fucked it up this time
Didn't I, my dear?

8. Timshel: Another team song, because they've all been there at one point or another:
Cold is the water
It freezes your already cold mind
Already cold, cold mind
And death is at your doorstep
And it will steal your innocence
But it will not steal your substance

But you are not alone in this
And you are not alone in this
As brothers we will stand and we'll hold your hand
Hold your hand

9. Thistle and Weeds: I think of Sam in war in this one:
Look over your hills and be still
The sky above us shoots to kill
Rain down, rain down on me

But I will hold on, I will hold on hope….

I begged you to hear me, there's more than flesh and bones
Let the dead bury the dead, they will come out in droves
But take the spade from my hands and fill in the holes you've made

But plant your hope with good seeds
Don't cover yourself with thistle and weeds
Rain down, rain down on me

(an aside- "Plant your hope with good seeds, don't cover yourself with thistle and weeds" is one of my favorite lines in the whole album)

10. Awake My Soul: This one could apply to almost all of them, really:
How fickle my heart and how woozy my eyes
I struggle to find any truth in your lies
And now my heart stumbles on things I don't know
This weakness I feel I must finally show

Lend me your hand and we'll conquer them all
But lend me your heart and I'll just let you fall
Lend me your eyes I can change what you see
But your soul you must keep, totally free

(also aside- this is my favorite song on the album. I walk around singing it under my breath when I'm stressed out)

11. Dust Bowl Dance: The first half of this song, at one point, I just got this image of a little 8 year old Deeks standing there, grubby little hands clutching a gun, tear streaks down his face and just waiting for the cops to come take him away after he shot his father.
The young man stands on the edge of his porch
The days were short and the father was gone
There was no one in the town and no one in the field
This dusty barren land had given all it could yield

But the second half, when it gets more raucous, that's G in Romania. Or possibly getting into the police car at the end of S3, when we still thought that was real:

There will come a time I will look in your eye
You will pray to the God that you always denied
The I'll go out back and I'll get my gun
I'll say, "You haven't met me, I am the only son"

Seal my heart and break my pride
I've nowhere to stand and now nowhere to hide
Align my heart, my body, my mind
To face what I've done and do my time

12. After the Storm: Kensi, after "Blye, K", when she knows the truth about her father's death:
And there will come a time, you'll see, with no more tears.
And love will not break your heart, but dismiss your fears.
Get over your hill and see what you find there,
With grace in your heart and flowers in your hair.
