Wanna see the bottom of a tree? Of course you do:

uprooted tree with woman standing next to roots

I'm in there for scale (for reference, I'm just about 5'4/ 1.62 m). That happened in our back neighbor's yard and landed in our next door neighbor's yard. Fortunately, it didn't actually hit anything- it's well away from both neighbors' houses (our back neighbor has a large back yard. The tree was near their property line, but more towards our yard than the next door's yard).

We lost a tree too:

tree downed by storm

This little tree snapped from the wind. It's maybe, oh, 5-6 years old, so not very large. It's a volunteer tree- actually, it came off the uprooted tree. They're honey locust trees, and they propagate through their roots (I learned that yesterday). But it also did not hit anything- it's way far back in the yard away from the house. We got lucky that the trees near the house were fine, but we think the wind got blocked by the apartment buildings directly behind the house. This set of trees (the little tree is mostly in line with the one that got uprooted) is in a part of the yard that is something of a wind tunnel because there's a space between apartment buildings over on that side.

As you may have surmised, we had a storm come through here yesterday afternoon. I wasn't home for it, and it wasn't that bad up at work, where I was (I work about 25 miles away), but it knocked out power in most of my town for several hours (there are still people without power, actually- ours came back on after about 5 hours, so we got lucky) and clearly did a number on the arboreal population of our town. There was a lot of debris on the roadways and power lines down across the freeway right at our exit (probably the reason we lost power). We're thinking the tree got uprooted mostly because the ground was so saturated- it's been raining/storming daily for close to two weeks and there's been flash flooding in all the outlying areas. And I'm surprised we only lost one tree, actually.

But yeah, that was interesting.
