Kind of impressed
Jan. 4th, 2014 06:43 pmMy lung functions are "awesome". That's impressive, given how frigid it is here (actually, today it's not bad, but it was under 20F/-6C this morning when I went to the doctor, which is generally not a good breathing range for me). I was not expecting them to be as good as they have been, given the cold (and the fact that the pulmonary testing was harder than usual. Because I was cold).
WRT sinus infections, we're going to chalk up last year's 4-5 infections as a fluke for the moment (it's possible- I was in a new environment with work, which both exposes me to a lot more people than I had been when I was spending most of my time at home while unemployed and brings me in contact with different/more potential allergens. Also, different stress pattern, which plays a role. And I started the allergy shots, which could have potentially been a contributing factor as my immune system went "ack! WTF is this?!?"). If it happens again this year, it's ENT time to check things out. In the meanwhile, I'm going to attempt to behave myself better with the sinus rinsing, which will probably help. I detest the sinus rinse/neti pot. It's incredibly uncomfortable for me- I know that's not the case for most people- and my sinuses drain so slowly that I can tilt my head 4-5 hours later and all of a sudden get water gushing out of my nose, which is not pleasant. I can put up with quite a few fairly unpleasant things in terms of treating my various and sundry chronic conditions/diseases, but this one I struggle with. So, I'm going to aim for 50% compliance this month (which is much better than the current 0% compliance) with an ultimate goal of 80% compliance (I can achieve 100% compliance with some things- antibiotics, for example- but generally aiming for 100% just sets me up for failure).
But at the moment, my sinuses are non-infected and my ears seem to finally have gotten back with the program, so I can go back to the pool this week. Once it warms back up- there's no way in hell I'm going swimming when the outside temperatures are -15F/-26C, even in an heated indoor pool (in my experience, when it gets down below about 20F/-6C, it doesn't matter. The water is going to be too cold, because that's a lot of water in a room that generally has a lot of windows/ventilation). But it's only going to be extremely cold on Monday and Tuesday, so by Wednesday or Thursday, it should be okay.
I'm really pleased, though. I wasn't expecting there to be a major change from July in terms of function (I'd notice, trust me), but I was expecting an ENT referral and a major lecture about slacking on the allergy shots, and possibly a decrease in function that could lead to a winter med change and none of that happened (well, okay, I got a, "you're going to get back on track with the shots, right? Yes? Okay, good", but no real lecture).
