This is better
Jan. 11th, 2014 01:32 pmSo, this week, we had what the weather people called a Polar Vortex. I don't quite get the science (okay, I haven't looked at the science. I probably would more or less understand it if I had), but basically, it meant it was extremely, extremely cold. January is already the coldest month in Ohio. Our normal temperatures range from about 20F/-6C on the lower end to about 40F/4C on the warmer end. Occasionally, you'll get a day where the high is in 20s or in the higher 40s (January thaw- usually happens around my birthday), but we hang out around freezing or just above or below for most of the month.
On Monday and Tuesday, it was well below 0F/-17C. I believe at the lowest, sometime on Tuesday, it got down around -15F/-26C. And that was not so bad compared to other places in the Midwest. I discovered this week that -40F and -40C are the same temperature, because someone who lived someplace where it was that cold told me they heard that on the news. This posed me a minor problem, because I'm technically not supposed be outside if it's under 20F. Now, I ignore that all the time, because I do live in Ohio. However, if it gets down into single digits, I really am flirting with an asthma attack if I go outside. Even bundled up. Therefore, I worked from home on Monday and Tuesday and just coughed my way through Wednesday (it was in the teens/low 20s, so warm enough that I could manage). It got progressively warmer and today it is 52F/11C. My sinuses are unhappy, but I'm thrilled to walk outside with an unzipped jacket and not my heavy winter coat and not need 10 layers of clothing even inside to be comfortable. It won't last- we'll be back to freezing by early next week- but definitely better.
So, that was one thing this week. And then, Thursday night, my dad decided to get creative in how he heated up some leftover garlic bread and put it on a piece of foil on top of the toaster (with nothing in the toaster). He melted the toaster. This might be something of an inconvience in many houses, but um, yeah, we toast everything. There's a line in a
busaikko HP story where Sirius is visiting Lupin prior to the whole Secret Keeper thing. Lupin is staying with his father and his father mentions something as being good on toast and Sirius gets the impression that "good on toast sums up the Lupin family attitude towards most foods" or something along those lines. Yeah, that's my family. If it's bread, it will probably wind up being toasted. I was seriously wondering what I was going to eat for lunch today, because, um, no toaster. So Mom and I went to buy a toaster this morning, so that we could eat lunch. Much better.
