May. 31st, 2014 01:08 pmI did my sleep study last night. It was not horrible, but definitely not the best night of sleep I've ever gotten. It took forever to hook up all the wires-- there were a ton of them- all over my head for the EEG, a couple by my eyes to measure eye movement, a mic by my mouth to pick up sound, three or four on my chin and jaw to measure teeth grinding, a reverse nasal cannula to measure how much air I was moving, two EKG leads, two bands around my chest and abdomen to pick up breathing movement, and two leads on each leg to measure leg movements (we were not just testing if I have sleep apnea, we were trying to determine why I move around so much and whether my REM sleep is normal, too. And apparently whether I grind my teeth, which, um, yes, I do and could have just told them that. I have a night guard already for that, which I was actually wearing last night). And then once all the wires were hooked up, there were some connectivity problems, so a couple things had to get replaced and redone. It took me a while to fall asleep, but it was more comfortable than I expected it to be- I had plenty of slack to move around. I didn't sleep particularly deeply- most of it was the kind of sleep where I'm kind of asleep but my brain hasn't completely cut out. But I did dream about being a cyborg, so I'm pretty sure I did sleep. And they woke me up twice and I was definitely asleep when that happened. The first time they woke me up about halfway through the night because they needed to see what happens when I sleep on my back. I don't sleep on my back, generally speaking (sometimes when I'm hot, I wind up that way, but it was comfortably cold in there) and I don't know how long I managed to do that, but they didn't wake me back up to try again, so they must have gotten enough data. And then the second time was when they were done and it was time to go home, around 6ish this morning, I think. Which means they got enough data overnight, because they told me that if they didn't by the time I usually wake up (which is around 6 anyway), and I woke up, they'd try to get me to sleep a little more.
Getting the wires off took much less time, but I looked liked I'd been through one wild party between my usual epic bed head (hazard of super short hair) and the wax paste still all over. I went home and took a shower. It took a little doing to get the wax out of my hair, but it wasn't too bad (tip from the tech- put conditioner in your hair first and comb it out. The combing part didn't help because my hair is so thick, but scrubbing with my fingers got it out pretty easily. Good thing I hadn't cut my nails yet). I only have one patch of skin that got super irritated (the tape didn't really bug me- it usually doesn't- but they exfoliate the skin to help the wires conduct better and my skin is not generally amenable to exfoliation), but it's not terrible and the rest of it isn't too bad. I managed to go grocery shopping after my shower (hey, I was up and it wouldn't be crowded) and then I came home and slept for about three hours. I'm still kind of tired- I was short on sleep all week because my AC is broken and it was hot most of the week, plus I'm still recovering from last week- but I don't have much planned so I can veg and sleep more later if I want.
I won't get the results for about a month- it takes awhile to compile all the data because they measure every 30 seconds all night long, so that's a lot of data. I have a follow up appointment already scheduled for the end of June where they'll go over the data and figure out what to do.
