Today was race day. I finished! I finished in really good time- 1:14:33. I was expecting 1:20 at the fastest, possibly closer to 1:30, so that's really a whole lot better than I expected.
It was very crowded and I was there alone before the race. I got there around 8 because I wanted close parking, and at first it was fine, but there were over 10,000 participants (12,000 registered), so that's a lot of people. I parked myself on a wall near the walker's corral and ate my snacks (spread out over the next hour and a half) and tried not to panic as it got more and more crowded. Around 9, I walked back to where the restrooms were (far away from where I was sitting) and had to really psych myself up to get back to my wall. But I did (they kept announcing that there would be 12,000 people racing, I think in an effort to get people excited. I wanted the guy to shut up about it so I wouldn't have a panic attack before reaching the starting line!).
It took a very long time to start- I was at the very back of the pack, because there was more room there. I didn't cross the starting line until 10:37 (first runners were already finished before I started- they started at 10) and I was damn near the last one across. But I just kept reminding myself that 1) it's chip timed, so my official time didn't start until I crossed the starting line and 2) my race, nobody else's. The first mile was a little rough- I realized abruptly that I'd forgotten to put my ankle brace on and it wasn't happy, but it calmed down after the first mile. I also tripped and almost took a header into the pavement, but I caught myself and was fine. The weather was pretty much perfect, although it was more sunny than I'd expected it to be (I would have preferred a little more overcast- I don't own sunglasses). But the temperature was good- about 70F/21C, with a strong breeze almost the whole time. I had long sleeves on, because I get cold when I sweat and I was also expecting it to be grey and possibly raining at first, but you can't ever count on Central Ohio weather to do what you expect. I just shoved up my sleeves, although I pulled them down later because I got chilly.
I did well with blood sugar management. I had peanut butter toast and a banana when I got up at 6:45, and then a greek yogurt when I got to the race at 8. I had some graham crackers with peanut butter and chocolate around 8:45 and another banana around 9:15. I also had Gatorade in my water bottle, which helped. I didn't need my emergency gel chews (all glucose, not much different from the tablets my dad carries around for when his sugar drops too low). I actually wasn't even hungry when I finished (I was about 20 minutes later). My inhaler, though, gave up the ghost around mile 3, so the last mile was a little challenging, breathing wise, but not dangerously so.
I was a little overwhelmed, though. I started crying when I got to the stadium, because I couldn't believe I was going to finish, but I finished strong. I even managed to run the last 50 yards, so I was running when I crossed the finish line (slowly, but running!). I had fun. I might do this race again next year. The only issue I had was that they ran out of cups by the time I got to the water station, and I really wanted a drink of water at that point (I had Gatorade, but my mouth was sticky).
After the race, my mom drove me home (they came to see me finish, but they actually missed it, because they weren't expecting me for nearly another 10 minutes!) and I had a hamburger and some fries on the way home. Then I had a glass of saline drink after my shower and I collapsed for about two hours. I got up and then I was hungry. I'm going to put pizza in for dinner, and I might just eat the whole thing (it's a very small crust. Probably personal pizza sized from a pizza place. I usually just eat half and save the other half). I am sore already, despite having some Advil when I got home, but I'm going to do some recovery stuff before I go to bed (legs up the wall, etc, and I'm wearing tights right now, which is helping) and I'll probably be more or less fine tomorrow.
